An Achuar-owned lodge deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon
A remote ecolodge in the Achuar Nation's territory near the Pastaza and Capahuari rivers, in the roadless rainforest of southeastern Ecuador close to the Peruvian border. Fully owned and operated by the Achuar people, it is a landmark of genuinely community-led Amazon tourism.
The Achuar, a Jivaroan people, chose tourism as a deliberate strategy to protect their forest from oil extraction and to sustain their communities on their own terms. Ownership of the Kapawi lodge was fully transferred to the Achuar, who now run it themselves.
