A major inland Senegalese city on the Saloum River, long the centre of the country's groundnut (peanut) trade. It has a river port linked to the coast and one of West Africa's largest covered markets.
The city grew as a colonial-era peanut export hub with a river port serving the Saloum basin. It is also an important center of the Niassène branch of the Tijaniyya Sufi order.
