Kalpa is a Himalayan village in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, set at around 2,960m in the upper Sutlej valley. It looks directly across the gorge at the snow-clad Kinner Kailash range, whose peaks glow at sunrise, and is surrounded by terraced apple orchards, chilgoza pine forest and old timber temples. Once the district headquarters, it remains a quiet base for the wider Kinnaur region.
Kinnaur lies on old trade routes toward Tibet, and its people blend Hindu and Tibetan Buddhist traditions, reflected in Kalpa's twin Narayan-Nagini temple and Buddhist monastery standing side by side. During British times the area drew colonial officials — Lord Dalhousie among those said to have admired its views — and Kalpa served as the tehsil and later district centre before administration shifted to nearby Reckong Peo. Apple cultivation, introduced in the 20th century, transformed the local economy and now shapes the village's terraced landscape.
