A port town on the western shore of Lake Tanganyika, with a lake harbor and an airport. It is a crossing point toward Tanzania across the lake.

Founded as Albertville in the colonial period, it was a rail-and-lake transport link. Its port connected the Congo interior with East African trade routes.
