Kahului is the main commercial center of Maui, on the island's northern shore. It is served by Kahului Airport (OGG), Maui's principal airport, and Kahului Harbor, the island's deepwater port.
Kahului developed around its harbor and a sugar plantation and railroad in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A planned residential community known as 'Dream City' was built here for plantation workers in the postwar era.
