Jermuk is Armenia's leading spa and mineral-water resort, set at 2,080m on the Arpa River in the Vayots Dzor forest in southern Armenia. The town's name means 'warm water' in Armenian — its 21 mineral springs emit water at 28–63°C with high mineral content, and Jermuk water has been bottled and exported across the former Soviet space since the 1950s. Jermuk's thermal springs were known in antiquity but the town was developed primarily in the Soviet period as a health resort — the grand sanatorium buildings from the 1940s–70s are still largely intact and operational, giving the town its characteristic Soviet-spa architecture. The mineral water bottling plant, established in 1952, became one of the Soviet Union's better-known mineral water brands.
