A narrow island in Quintana Roo separated from the mainland by a lagoon, reached by ferry from Chiquilá harbor and served by a small airstrip. There are no paved roads or cars; golf carts move people around the sandy streets. The waters draw whale sharks in summer.
Holbox was long a quiet fishing community within the Yum Balam protected area. Its name comes from Yucatec Maya, and the village grew slowly around lobster and shark fishing before tourism arrived.
