Small island capital below an active volcano
Isangel is the administrative center of Tanna island in Vanuatu, near Whitegrass Airport and the nearby port at Lenakel. The island is known for Mount Yasur, one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes.
Tanna retains strong traditional custom (kastom) practices and is associated with the John Frum cargo movement that emerged in the 20th century. Isangel developed as the island's colonial and later provincial seat.
