Imperatriz sits on the west bank of the Tocantins River with river landings and Prefeito Renato Moreira Airport. It is Maranhão's second-largest city and a regional commercial center.
Founded in the mid-19th century as a mission settlement on the Tocantins, it was named in honor of the Brazilian empress. It grew significantly along the Belém-Brasília highway in the 20th century.
