Mekong border town and slow-boat departure point
A small town in northwestern Laos on the Mekong River, across from Chiang Khong in Thailand. It has a river port and is the usual launch point for the two-day slow boat down the Mekong to Luang Prabang.
The town sits at a historic Mekong crossing near the edge of the old Golden Triangle trade region. The Fourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge nearby opened the border to road traffic in 2013.
