A small West Coast town at a river mouth on New Zealand's South Island, known for pounamu (greenstone) carving and its long grey-sand beach. It has a regional airport with flights to Christchurch.
During the 1860s West Coast gold rush it briefly became one of New Zealand's busiest ports, its river bar crossed by dozens of ships. The gold faded, leaving a heritage of jade and craft.
