Guaymas is a natural deep-water port on the Gulf of California, a fishing and cargo harbor with a nearby international airport. Rugged desert hills meet the sea around its bays.
Long the main port of Sonora, Guaymas developed around its sheltered harbor in the 1800s. The adjacent resort area of San Carlos grew later as a boating and sportfishing destination.
