Guayaquil is Ecuador's largest city and main port, set on the Guayas River near the Pacific. Its riverfront Malecón 2000 promenade anchors the center, and it is served by José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport.
Founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, Guayaquil became Ecuador's chief port and shipbuilding center. It was the site of the 1822 meeting between Simón Bolívar and José de San Martín.
