Gjoa Haven, Canada

The Arctic harbour that sheltered Amundsen's Northwest Passage

Gjoa Haven is a small Inuit hamlet on King William Island in Nunavut, the only community on the island. Isolated above the Arctic Circle in the heart of the Northwest Passage, it takes its name from the ship of the first expedition to successfully sail the passage from end to end.

Roald Amundsen wintered here from 1903 to 1905 aboard the Gjøa, and named the natural harbour after the ship. During those two years his crew learned Arctic survival, clothing and dog-sledging techniques from the local Netsilik Inuit — knowledge that helped Amundsen reach the South Pole years later. The surrounding waters are also close to where Franklin's lost 1845 expedition met its end.
