Gisborne is a city on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, with a regional airport and a port at the meeting of three rivers. It is a wine-growing area and one of the first cities in the world to see each new day's sunrise.
The area was where James Cook first made landfall in New Zealand in 1769, and where Māori navigators had earlier settled the fertile coast. The city retains strong Māori cultural presence.
