Ganvié is a town built entirely on water: tens of thousands of Tofinu people live in bamboo-and-wood houses raised on stilts across the shallow, brackish expanse of Lake Nokoué, north of Cotonou. According to Tofinu tradition, the village was founded around the 17th century as a refuge from the slave-raiding warriors of the powerful Fon kingdom of Dahomey. A religious prohibition forbade the Fon from attacking anyone living on water, so the Tofinu retreated onto Lake Nokoué and built their homes on stilts beyond the reach of the raiders — the name Ganvié is often glossed as 'we survived' or 'community of those who found peace'.
