Espargos is the largest town on Sal and sits beside Amílcar Cabral International Airport, one of Cape Verde's main air gateways. It serves as the administrative and transport hub for the island's beach resorts.
The town developed in the 20th century around the airport built during the colonial era as a transatlantic refuelling stop. Its name comes from the wild asparagus once found on the surrounding plain.
