Erdenet grew around one of the world's largest copper and molybdenum mines. It has a domestic airport and a rail spur connecting it to the national network.
Established in 1974 as a joint Mongolian-Soviet mining venture, it quickly became one of Mongolia's most populous cities. The mine remains central to the local economy.
