Dire Dawa is an eastern Ethiopian city served by Aba Tenna Dejazmach Yilma International Airport. It grew up around the historic Ethiopia-Djibouti railway.

The city was founded in 1902 when the railway from Djibouti reached the area and bypassed nearby Harar. It developed into a major commercial and industrial centre split by a seasonal riverbed.
