The capital of Western Province on a small island off the south coast, with Daru Airport and a harbor. It lies near the mouth of the vast Fly River, close to Torres Strait.
Daru was a colonial administrative and mission station guarding the approaches to the Fly River. It remains the coastal hub for one of PNG's largest and least-developed provinces.
