Green Yungas hill town at the end of the old Death Road
Coroico is a small, warm town perched on a ridge in the Nor Yungas of Bolivia, where the Andes tumble down toward the Amazon basin. At around 1,700 metres it enjoys a subtropical climate and sweeping views over cloud-forest valleys planted with coffee, coca and citrus. It is the usual finish point for the famous 'Death Road' (the old Yungas Road) descent from La Paz, now ridden mostly by downhill mountain bikers rather than trucks.
Founded in the Spanish colonial period, the Yungas around Coroico became home to Afro-Bolivian communities descended from Africans once enslaved in the silver mines of Potosí. Villages such as Tocaña nearby keep alive saya music and a distinct Afro-Bolivian culture, while the old cliff-hugging road to La Paz — long one of the world's most dangerous — was bypassed by a new paved highway in the 2000s.
