Cooktown lies at the mouth of the Endeavour River in Far North Queensland, with a regional airport and a river harbor. It marks the northern end of the sealed coastal road and the edge of Cape York.
In 1770 James Cook beached HMS Endeavour here for repairs after striking the Great Barrier Reef, and the town takes its name from him. It later boomed briefly as a port during the Palmer River gold rush.
