Border trade hub by the great dam
Ciudad del Este is Paraguay's second-largest city, at the Brazil border on the Paraná, served by Guaraní International Airport. It is a major commercial center beside the Itaipú Dam.
Founded in 1957 and originally named after President Stroessner, it grew rapidly with the Itaipú Dam project and cross-border trade. The Friendship Bridge links it to Foz do Iguaçu in Brazil.
