Island oil port on the Gulf of Mexico
A city on Carmen Island in Campeche state, between the Gulf of Mexico and the Terminos Lagoon. It has its own airport and a busy port serving the offshore oil industry.
The island was a pirate base before Spanish forces took control in 1717 and established a settlement. It grew as a fishing and shrimping center and later boomed with the Bay of Campeche offshore oil industry from the 1970s.
