Ciudad del Carmen sits on an island between the Gulf of Mexico and the Términos Lagoon, a port and base for the offshore oil industry served by its own international airport. Bridges link the island to the mainland.
Once a base for pirates in the 1600s, the island was retaken and settled by the Spanish, who named it for Our Lady of Carmen. The oil boom of the late 1900s transformed it into a busy energy port.
