The polar bear capital of the world, on Hudson Bay
A remote town of under 900 people on the western shore of Hudson Bay in northern Manitoba, famous as the 'Polar Bear Capital of the World'. Bears gather here each autumn waiting for the sea ice to form; in summer thousands of beluga whales fill the river mouth, and the town sits under one of the best aurora-viewing skies on Earth.
The site has been used by Indigenous peoples for millennia and became a fur-trade hub — the stone Prince of Wales Fort was built here by the Hudson's Bay Company in the 18th century to guard the bay. There has never been an all-weather road to Churchill; it remains accessible only by rail or air.
