Chiang Khan, Thailand

Wooden-shophouse town on a quiet bend of the Mekong

Chiang Khan is a small riverside town in Loei province, northeastern Thailand, looking across the Mekong to Laos. Its old Chai Khong street of century-old teak shophouses has become a nostalgic weekend escape: dawn almsgiving to monks, guesthouses and cafés in the wooden buildings, riverside noodle breakfasts, and sunrise viewpoints at Phu Thok hill and the Kaeng Khut Khu rapids just downstream.

An old trading settlement on the Lao frontier, Chiang Khan kept its rows of timber shophouses when many Thai towns rebuilt in concrete. From the 2000s that surviving streetscape fuelled a domestic-tourism revival built around heritage, slow-town charm and the Mekong.
