Patagonian gateway town rebuilt after a volcano
A small town on the coast of northern Chilean Patagonia, with a small airfield and a ferry harbor linking it to Puerto Montt and Chiloé. It is a starting point for the Carretera Austral. Fjords and forests surround it.
Chaitén was largely destroyed in 2008 when the nearby Chaitén volcano erupted unexpectedly, forcing evacuation and burying part of town in ash and mud. It was later partly rebuilt on higher ground.
