A coastal town on Turkey's Aegean peninsula west of Izmir, known for beaches, windsurfing and a restored Genoese castle. Its harbor runs regular ferries to the Greek island of Chios.
The area was the ancient settlement of Cyssus and later a Genoese and Ottoman port. A naval battle offshore in 1770 is a noted event in Ottoman-Russian history.
