The Dutch East India Company (VOC) established a refreshment station at the Cape in 1652 — the first permanent European settlement in southern Africa, intended to supply ships on the India route. British colonial rule from 1806 brought more settlers and codified racial classification systems that became the foundation of apartheid (1948–1994). Cape Town is South Africa's legislative capital — Parliament sits here — and one of three capitals alongside Pretoria (executive) and Bloemfontein (judicial).
