Victoria Island hamlet and hub of the central Arctic
An Inuit hamlet of around 1,750 people on the southeast coast of Victoria Island, the largest community in Nunavut's Kitikmeot region. Known in Inuinnaqtun as Iqaluktuuttiaq, 'place of many fish,' it is a transport and research hub on the Northwest Passage.
The area has been used by Inuit and their predecessors for thousands of years as a seasonal fishing and hunting camp. A permanent settlement grew in the 20th century around a Hudson's Bay Company post, missions and, later, a Distant Early Warning radar station.
