Lakeside town on Victoria's western shore
A green town on the western shore of Lake Victoria in northwest Tanzania, a centre for coffee and banana growing. It has an airport and a lake port with ferry links to Mwanza across the water.
Long the heartland of the Haya people, it became a German and later British colonial station on the lake. Coffee cultivation introduced in the colonial era remains central to its economy.
