A coastal port city in Grand Bassa County, Liberia, historically shipping iron ore and rubber through its harbour. It sits on a wide bay with beaches south of the capital, Monrovia.
Founded by freed African-American settlers in the 1830s and named after an early colonial governor, it grew as a port. A mid-twentieth-century iron-ore railway to the interior boosted its harbour.
