Bosaso (historically Bender Qassim) is the commercial capital of Puntland, Somalia's semi-autonomous northeastern region, and the busiest port on the Somali coast of the Gulf of Aden. Bosaso sits near the ancient port of Mosylon, cited in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea (1st century CE) as a major exporter of frankincense, myrrh, and cassia to Rome and Arabia. The surrounding Cal Madow mountains were part of the ancient incense trade network that predates Islam. The city developed as a dhow port through the medieval period, integrated into the Indian Ocean commercial world. Puntland declared autonomy in 1998 as a federal member state of Somalia, and Bosaso has since grown substantially through diaspora remittances and cross-Gulf trade.
