Blantyre, Malawi

Malawi's commercial capital — nsima with usipa fish, Limbe Market, and retro colonial-era avenues

Blantyre is Malawi's commercial capital and oldest city — a hillside city of Scottish colonial architecture, a lively trading community, and one of southern Africa's most authentic everyday food scenes. The Limbe Market is where Malawi's agriculture is traded: dried usipa lake fish, nsima meal, dried beans, and the enormous nsima portions that form the base of every meal. The city has almost no tourist infrastructure, which means the restaurants, markets, and street sellers are entirely aimed at Malawians.

Blantyre was founded in 1876 by Scottish missionaries from the Church of Scotland — named for David Livingstone's birthplace in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire. The Church of St Michael and All Angels (completed 1891) was built entirely by African converts trained by the mission, without a European architect. The city was the capital of the British Central Africa Protectorate before Zomba and later Lilongwe took that role.
