Crowded islet port at the tip of Tarawa
Betio is the most densely populated islet of South Tarawa and Kiribati's main port, handling the country's shipping through its harbor. It is linked by causeway to the rest of the Tarawa chain, with Bonriki International Airport further along the atoll.
Betio was the site of the Battle of Tarawa in November 1943, one of the costliest amphibious assaults of the Pacific War. Wartime bunkers and guns still stand among the modern settlement.
