Bethel is a regional hub for dozens of Yup'ik villages in southwest Alaska, off the road system. It has a river port on the Kuskokwim and Bethel Airport, one of Alaska's busier regional fields.

The site has been a Yup'ik settlement for centuries and became a Moravian mission station in the 1880s. It grew into the main commercial and government hub for the Yukon-Kuskokwim delta.
