A preserved Newar bazaar town riding a Himalayan ridge
Bandipur is a hilltop trading town in central Nepal whose car-free main street of tall Newari merchant houses has survived almost intact. Perched on a ridge above the Marsyangdi valley, it offers a long panorama of the Himalaya — the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges — on clear mornings. Its slate-roofed shophouses, temples and terraced fields make it one of the best-kept traditional streetscapes in the country.
Bandipur was settled largely by Newar traders from Bhaktapur in the 18th and 19th centuries, who turned it into a prosperous stop on the trade route between India and Tibet. That wealth built the ornate wood-carved houses and temples that still line the bazaar. When the Prithvi Highway was cut through the valley below in the 1970s, commerce moved to the roadside town of Dumre — bypassing Bandipur and, by accident, preserving its old townscape from modern redevelopment.
