Banaba (Ocean Island), Kiribati

A raised phosphate island scarred by a century of mining

A small raised coral island in the central Pacific, isolated far to the west of Kiribati's other groups, with only a few hundred residents. Once one of the world's richest phosphate sources, it was strip-mined for most of the 20th century.

Home to the distinct Banaban people, the island's phosphate was mined intensively from 1900 under British and later joint colonial control, stripping much of its surface. Most Banabans were resettled to Rabi Island in Fiji, especially after WWII.
