Maine's quiet capital — a Kennebec River mill city and gateway to lake country
Augusta is the capital of Maine and one of the smallest US state capitals. Set on the Kennebec River, it's a working New England city with a handsome granite State House and Fort Western, the oldest surviving wooden fort in the US (1754). It sits at the edge of Maine's vast lake country — Moosehead Lake and the Rangeley Lakes are a couple of hours north. Stephen King, Maine's most famous resident, lives in Bangor, 60 miles to the northeast.
