Oil city on the Ural river near the Caspian
A city straddling the Ural River close to the Caspian Sea, at the heart of Kazakhstan's oil industry. Atyrau International Airport serves the region and a river-sea port operates nearby.
Founded in 1640 as a fortified trading post at the Ural's mouth, it was long known as Guryev. It became a major petroleum centre in the 20th century.
