Arrecife is the capital of the Canary island of Lanzarote, served by Lanzarote Airport and a port on the island's east coast. Two seafront castles once guarded it against pirates.
The town takes its name, meaning 'reef,' from the volcanic rocks that shelter its harbor. Much of the island's modern look was shaped by the artist César Manrique, who blended architecture with the volcanic landscape.
