Northern port on a huge sheltered bay
Antsiranana, also known as Diego Suarez, is a port city at the northern tip of Madagascar on a large natural bay, with Arrachart Airport nearby. Its deep harbour has long made it a naval and shipping site.
The bay was used as a French naval base for much of the colonial period, giving the city a strategic maritime role. Its layout and architecture still reflect that era.
