Ancona is the main city of the Marche region, served by Ancona Airport and one of the Adriatic's leading ferry ports to Croatia and Greece. Its harbor curves in the elbow shape that gave the city its Greek-derived name.
Founded by Greek settlers from Syracuse around 387 BC, Ancona later became a Roman port, marked by the surviving Arch of Trajan. It remained an important maritime republic and trading city through the Middle Ages.
