Alotau is the capital of Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea, served by Gurney Airport and a port on Milne Bay. It is the departure point for the many islands and reefs of the province.
Milne Bay was the site of a 1942 battle in which Allied forces repelled a Japanese amphibious landing. Alotau later became the provincial administrative and shipping center.
