Adak was home to the Unangax̂ (Aleut) people for millennia before being evacuated and heavily militarised during World War II, when the Aleutian Campaign brought fighting to American soil. The Navy built a major Cold War base here that closed in 1997, leaving the town a fraction of its former size.
